2010 Festival highlighted on Kayaksurf.net

There is new energy in the oceans of our planet; the Worlds Surf Kayaking Championships in Portugal was a success even though it occurred in a somewhat inopportune time for many summer employed athletes caught in an economic downturn, the East Coast will feature the next worlds so the US will be out in force, and the new WCSKC, http://surf.kayaking.com/ , is rolling with a whole new series of events to bring more athletes into the fold.

First time competing - what a great time

Thought I'd post a note about the surf festival last weekend. In previous years I've been down to watch others compete and hang out in Santa Cruz on the weekend of the surf festival but never really thought that I'd participate. I can tell you that it was a lot of fun.... much more fun than just watching even if I'm not a pro at the "A" site. I'll let Buck and Anders speak about how it was to surf there. I'll talk about the "B" site, home of the "extreme novice" and hope that Donna, Joanne, and anyone else who participated add their $0.02.

Western Sea Kayakers Club posts

From various members of the Western Sea Kayakers Club:

We went last year and enjoyed hanging out. I didn't even realize that we could compete. Then we saw Joanne and Jie were competing in the novice division (and Jie won 2nd place), and wandering around all geared up so they inspired me to want to participate this year.

Signing up helped Ed and me get focused on kayak surfing over the last couple of months. During the festival it was really fun to be part of the event. I highly recommend signing up just to help with getting focused and participating.

At the B Site Meeting on Sat. morning I started getting quite nervous with all the rules and regulations and wondered what I had got myself into.

Hooray Ed and Donna and Joanne for the WSK sweep! It was great

Sean Morley Team Notes

Hi Folks,

Well done for stepping up for the Team. I think I was voted in as Team Trainer for 2009. I am not sure how much surfing I will get to do in the next couple of months as I am travelling much of April and May but I am still contactable by email.

I can put together training programs for you, including cardio vascular, strength endurance, power and skills related. Whatever you want. I also have video of most of you and can give advice on technique, equipment and tactics if you want that. If you are thinking of changing any of your equipment, now is the time to do it, not July!

Surf Ambassador Ed Guzman's Contest Observations

To all who were in the Kayak contest,
I thoroughly enjoyed the event! My job as the Surf Ambassador became many things. The biggest responsibility was to keep surfers out of the contest area and prevent interferences. At Steamer Lane on the bigger days when the surf is Pumping, this will become a major diplomatic and logistical task. Weighing in at a fearsome 150 lbs of solid muscle and bone with an untrimmed mustache, knowledge of what to do in most aquatic situations; I can be a force to be reckoned with. (Never piss off a skinny guy with a big nose and an untrimmed mustache).

Traditional Pre-contest Feed at the Crandall's

You are all invited to the traditional pre-contest feed at the Crandall's. Betty Crandall, the matriarch of the fold, cooks up every comfort food for the world of kayakers and invites you all to come and enjoy each other for an evening at her spacious house in Aptos/Freedom. It's a wonderful start to the weekend of competition. The sounds are of laughter and a cacophony of foreign human dialects. Come and enjoy-there will be plenty of food and conversation to go around.

Annual kayakers' dinner at the Crandall home:
When? Wednesday March 18th, at 6 p.m.
Where? 450 Cox Rd. (off Valencia Rd.), Aptos, Ca. 95003
Home phone: (831) 688-3643 (Jim & Bettie Crandall)

Stand-up surfing does not need PFDs

We have in this years event a new category of Stand-up surfing. It has been voiced that a PFD is not necessary for this vehicle as righting is not an issue and the ability to duck dive is. So we will delete PFDs for this class of paddle powered vehicle. Helmets are required for all paddle surf vehicles as head trauma from paddle, rocks and your own vehicle is ever-present.

Surf vehicle safety standards

The 23rd Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival is about to unroll another stellar event. In keeping with last years good graces everyone should envision smooth and glassy 10 to 15 footers with glistening sun for the weekend.
